2016 River Friendly Farmer of Indiana.

John Maddox (R) pictured with his Son, Mike Maddox receiving the River Friendly Farmer of Indiana award.

Annually, each county Soil and Water Conservation District may nominate up to two farmers who do an outstanding job of protecting their rivers, lakes and streams through their everyday conservation management practices on the farm. The statewide initiative recognizes farmers, who through good production management practices helps keep Indiana’s rivers, lakes and streams clean. John Maddox of Maddox Family Limited Partnership farms in the Salamonie River watershed.

The following conservation cropping systems or practices are used on Maddox’s Farm. No till – Conventional Till, Variable Rate Corn & Cover Crops. John also utilizes Waterways, Rock Chutes, Terraces, 2-stage Ditch, CRP, soil testing & nutrient management. With these practices, John has seen that sedimentation leaving the farm has been decreased greatly due to the use of these practices. He believes that these conservation practices have greatly reduced erosion which in turn increases soil health.

John is a current member of Farm Bureau since 1961. His family is involved in community 4-H, greatly involved in local high school where his family has been personally the recipient (twice) of the Monsanto Growers award.

We congratulate John Maddox of Maddox Family Limited Partnership as our 2016          River Friendly Farmer of Indiana.

Our speaker for the evening was Cindy Sheets from         Sweet Life Honey Farm
